Ice makers fail more often than any other part of a refrigerator, and in Los Angeles there is a specific reason for it: water. Much of the Valley runs hard, and scale builds up in the fill tube, the valve and the mold until cubes come out hollow, cloudy or not at all. Filters help, but only if they are actually changed.
Before you replace a whole refrigerator over it, have the ice maker looked at properly. The failure is usually the fill valve, a frozen fill tube or a filter that has not been changed in three years — not the sealed system.
Common ice maker problems we fix
- No ice at all. Water inlet valve, a frozen fill tube, a failed module, or simply the arm knocked into the off position. We check the cheap causes before quoting anything.
- Hollow, small or cloudy cubes. Low water pressure, a partially blocked valve, or scale in the mold. Very common on hard-water supplies across the Valley.
- Cubes fused into one block. The harvest cycle is stalling, or the freezer is running colder than the ice maker expects.
- Water leaking into the freezer or onto the floor. A cracked fill tube, a misaligned mold or a valve that no longer closes fully.
- Ice tastes or smells wrong. An exhausted filter, or a supply line that has picked up flavor. Cheap to fix and worth doing.
- Grinding or repeated cycling. The ejector motor or gear set, most often on in-door assemblies.

Every six months in most Los Angeles homes, and that is the single most effective thing you can do for both ice quality and the life of the valve.
Why is my ice cloudy?
Dissolved minerals and trapped air — a hard-water symptom rather than a fault. If it is accompanied by hollow or undersized cubes, the fill valve or pressure is the actual problem.
Is it worth repairing an in-door ice maker?
Yes, in almost every case. The repair is contained to that module and does not touch the sealed system of the refrigerator.
My ice maker stopped after a power outage. Is it broken?
Often not. Many units need the arm cycled or the module reset before they resume. Try that first — and if it still does nothing, the module or valve has likely failed.
